If we love God, we'll keep His commandments

We keep God’s commandments because we love Him.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. 1 Joh. 5:3

This text along with a myriad of others is crystal clear, and we should take note: Anyone who claims to be a Christian, keeps God’s commandments and obeys Him. The converse: someone who does not love God, does not keep His commandments.

Have you noticed some glaring things, this verse presupposes?

1. That God has indeed spoken reliably.
2. That His Word can be clearly understood (the perspicuity of scripture)
3. And many others, but we’ll stop here for now.

To be able to keep God’s commandments, we need to know what those commandments are. How can we know what God’s commandments are? Read and study His word, put in the time. I want to encourage you to dive into God’s word daily, to learn about Him, find out about His commandments. Spend the time and put in the work to rightfully handle and understand His word, to the enable you to keep His commandments. All this done in a God honouring manner.

The final point to ponder, those commandments and keeping them in particular, are not burdensome. We willingly keep His commandments, even though sometimes it may be at great cost to ourselves, because we love God.
